At the outset of its formation club membership was heavily over subscribed considering that buses were rationed and not readily available, then not every member was guaranteed a place on the bus. None the less the removal of the badge from the article came across as rather pompous and humourless.

However, it was not for many years before the club did formally adopt the four leafed clover as the official club badge, but the first steps had already been taken. The current version of the logo was designed in 1995 and was replaced by the 125-years anniversary badge for one year, in 1012.

The badge is displayed on all articles of Celtic merchandise and countless millions of people all over the world have seen this unique badge on an equally unique and impressive hooped shirt. The current badge is an amendment of the previous badge after the takeover in 1995 when the club changed their financial status to a Public Limited Company from a Private Limited Company, hence the writing around the badge had to be amended. Along the top of the resulting green frame, they’ve written the club’s name – ‘the Celtic Football Club’ – in white letters. At the same time, the team remains the top team in the country, consistently winning the Scottish Cup and the Scottish Cup.

The original Celtic logo depicted a green Celtic cross (a thick shape with a ring behind the two lines. Possibly the earliest evidence of the standard four leaf clover badge officially being used by the club. Their 2-1 European Cup victory over Inter Milan made Celtic the first British and only Scottish club to have achieved the honour. Theory: The below medal is the earliest known usage of the four leaf clover, and the design represents in part reflects the winning of four senior trophies that season. C. A member of the club, one of the Doyle family designed the bus plaque that was in time to become the official logo of Celtic F.

As ever, I am indebted to Dave at Historical Football Kits for some of the historical information used above. All were informed that the idea was to choose the best looking badge, independent of their support for the clubs. During the amendment, there was even speculative consideration by Fergus McCann (the then Chief Executive) of possibly changing the crest at one short point, but thankfully was never taken any further see article.

Still it’s the earliest use by the club of the symbol and a likely forerunner of the official badge. In addition to these highlights, for three consecutive seasons (2016/17, 2017/18 and 2018/19), Celtic have won every domestic trophy on offer (nine), completing the first Scottish ‘treble-treble’ (no other Scottish side has even won the domestic treble in two consecutive seasons). After the 2007/08 season, the star was retained and the badge remained the same until 2012/13 season, when Celtic celebrated their 125th anniversary by using a 1994 badge encircled by an attractive Celtic knot and an alternative badge featuring a Celtic cross. My father was president of the club, season ticket holder and one of three delegates of the Celtic Supporters Association.
