After about two days, it started to fade pretty badly and I noticed a lot of splotchiness and streaks. It’s very messy to apply and will be problematic for those with dry skin (which most men tend to have).

This is why I had to rank Vita Liberata Phenomenal 2-3 Week Tan Mousse so low, the color was so bad. In the lab, we used a digieye machine to take images of fake tan on our testers’ arms to assess the patchiness of the tan over a one-week period. The higher the score, the more even the tan. The very light (almost nonexistent) color I got from this mousse had an orange tint that wasn’t natural looking. Some products give an immediate tanned colour upon application – which is called a guide colour – while the long-lasting tan colour develops underneath. It’s normally a darker bronze shade and shows where the product has been applied to prevent missed patches or streakiness. The guide colour is then washed off after a few hours to reveal the final tan.

It also got all over my sink, towels and clothes. The bathroom looked like a dirty mess after I was done applying it! And it took longer than what it takes for lotions and gels.

On one side was the risk of sun beds and lasting sun damage. And on the other, the fuss of traditional fake tans. Orange, streaky and with a funny smell, they weren’t fooling anyone. Don’t forget to apply sun cream when going outside, too. Fake tan doesn’t include sun protection, so always apply a high SPF sun lotion to prevent skin damage and sunburn.
