That’s it, your Saurus is done! If your shield has areas that you want to make stone, like I did on mine, just follow the same steps from the stone weapon. Lizzie: What a name! Perfect on Daemonettes and other Daemons of Slaanesh – you can apply this over a light skin tone to create gaunt and sunken flesh. It’s also fun to use over metallics to create a really unique tone. The other parts of the models are more consistent – the shiny insectoid carapace uses Gryph-Charger Grey over a Leadbelcher basecoat, with added highlights of thin striped Stormhost Silver , all followed up with a wash of Terradon Turquoise thinned with Contrast Medium . The meat and bone bits are Flesh Tearers Red over Wraithbone, with Pallid Wych Flesh highlights. The meaty parts then got a thinned Volupus Pink wash, while the talons and hooves were finished with a wash of Gryph-Charger Grey. Gav: Termagants and Neurogaunts Magos Purple and Shyish Purple were lighter Contrast paints, perfect for tinting and glazing . Out of the pot Luxion Purple provides a rich and luxurious layer.

For their carapaces I used Karandras Green and applied Doomfire Magenta to their fleshier parts, while claws were painted with Blood Angels Red and the visible brain-like parts had Frostheart applied to them. I went old school on the basing and used a layer of Armageddon Dust which was then painted over with Warboss Green , washed in Biel-Tan Green and drybrushed with Niblet Green. Charlie: Custom Splinter Fleet Need a brown that’s got the tan punch of Snakebite Leather but is stronger like Cygor Brown? Garaghak’s Sewer is your weapon of choice. When it comes to Warhammer, you’ll most often find tentacles on models related to Nurgle, whether in Age of Sigmar or Warhammer 40,000, though Tyranids frequently sport them as well.Iyanden Yellow and Nazdreg Yellow were a dream for painters when they first dropped – easy-to-achieve yellows in one coat! Bad Moon Yellow provides an even brighter choice, especially over a White Scar undercoat. Blue paints are getting new options in the latest range. Celestium Blue slots between the brighter Talassar Blue and darker Ultramarine Blue. Lizzie: This is an incredibly versatile new shade of brown. It’s perfect for leather and cloth. This is fantastic for adding some extra grime to your Nurgle miniatures too. I envision the forces from my Tyranid splinter fleet absorbing bio-mass, adapting themselves to the warzone and changing their colours to match the environment. To this end I opted for a very ‘naturalistic’ scheme reminiscent of many insects and arachnids in our world – namely earthy tones with a lighter underbody and darker areas on any hard plates and carapaces.

That’s just 10 of the 25 new Contrast paints – we’ve already had ideas for coruscating bolts of energy with Mantis Warrior Green and some filthy underhive terrain with Garaghak’s Sewer. The possibilities are truly endless! Emma: Such a rich, vibrant teal colour! It’s perfect for Seraphon and many other models – I have even thinned it down to make a spooky verdigris for Grand Alliance Death models.Follow my Green Flames Rev iii for the recipe for the flames. Always do last as you can apply some minor OSL. Teal and turquoise are crucial when painting lizards, magic effects, and Space Marines like the Alpha Legion – and Kroxigor Scales fits alongside Leviadon Blue and Akhelian Green to give you even more choice. Lizzie: This is a really fun, swampy green with a number of applications. Naturally, it’s great for giving those Mantis Warriors some time in the spotlight. Glaze a highlight with the most appropriate colour. EG: on the dark legs, Emperor's Children . On the upper, mix Wraithbone into the Emperor's Children to build up highlights. Use almost pure Wraithbone on the face. Anyway, for this step I glazed in some thinned down Murder Scene from Army Painter’s Speedpaint range in a 50:50 mix of that and Speedpaint Medium, but this works just as well with something like Volupus Pink from Citadel. I also use this color on the skin tone I have to make the area the tentacle is emerging from look more like muscle.

The last time I painted a Tyranid model for my custom hive fleet was pre-Contrast paint, so it was nice to try out the new colours and find some much faster ways to get to a good result (shout-out to Striking Scorpion Green for that vivid tropical emerald). Contrast paints and Tyranids are such a perfect match. Darcy: Termagant Experiments In June, we invited Warhammer TV painting presenter Emma Robinson to talk about her favourite colours and some inspired uses for them. Today we’ve got her co-host, Lizzie Ward, to talk about her 10 favourite paints from the new range and how she has been using them. The remaining miniatures from the box were painted up to match my existing Tyranid force. I have quite a large army of these guys already, as well as a subservient Genestealer Cult, so I’ll be dropping these straight into that collection – which actually featured in the Crusade section of the previous Tyranids codex.Just like Mantis Warrior Green, this green ups the balance in favour of yellow, making for an eye-catching tone with a wide range of uses. There’s a lot of green in Warhammer, from Salamanders and Nurgle Daemons, to Orks and orruks! Gutrippa Flesh is here to help, slotting in between Militarum Green and Plaguebearer Flesh . Final tiny dot of Blue Horror . Small stipples of this on the teeth. Add a bit of White Scar here to add one final dot on the tip of the tongue only. Emma: This colour is all about punch, it’s so bright and powerful. Doomfire Magenta straight out of the pot gives you a vivid pink for cloth or magic spells. It also suits Daughters of Khaine or Escher Gangers if you want some cool pink hair colours. All of the ropes and leather straps on the model, including the grip on the weapon and shield, were tidied up with Wraithbone, before getting a coat of Gore-Grunta Fur.

I love using them as base colours for large armies and glazing over layers on highly detailed miniatures for extra colour saturation. The expansion of the Contrast range with new colours gives hobbyists an amazing opportunity to try different things! Jeffery is a bit farther along in this photo. and you can see how the tentacle contrasts directly with the rest of him Emma: Regally vibrant, Luxion Purple keeps a bright tone even in the darker areas of your miniatures – great for Hedonites of Slaanesh and the Emperor’s Children . This is my favourite purple Contrast of all time! Lizzie: Contrast paints are an incredible tool for any painter. Whether you are a complete beginner or an experienced hobbyist, these paints are easy to use and highly versatile – allowing you to create a number of fantastic effects.Imperial Fist takes up the gauntlet thrown down by Nazdreg Yellow and Iyanden Yellow, pushing the pigment further and making yellow even more of a breeze to paint. There isn’t a ton to painting tentacles – we’re going to cover a few different shades of pink and purple in the tutorials below – but there are some interesting techniques to consider when it comes to shading and finishing them. First I applied a blue and purple mix of deep toned translucent paints to the tentacle. Specifically I used Army Painter’s Beowulf Blue and Swarm Purple Speedpaints mixed at about 50:50. This was a bit brighter than I would like so I continued glazing, that said that could be a perfectly acceptable tentacle in the right context so feel free to stop there. Emma: Gutrippa Flesh is terrific and will save a lot of time when painting Kruleboyz or Gretchin as it gives an excellent base colour and shade that suits these boyz down to the ground. It’s really great for camo cloth too! I painted the off-yellow skin in slightly different ways on my Barbgaunts, Psychophage, and Von Ryan’s Leapers – employing various combos of Plaguebearer Flesh and thinned-down Nazdreg Yellow over a Wraithbone base, with highlights ranging from Dorn Yellow to Flayed One Flesh – but they all still look like closely-related beasties.
