The two core names in plug-in diffuser pheromones for dogs and cats are Adaptil (formerly known as DAP, or Dog Appeasing Pheromone) and Feliway (or Felifriend, a spray-bottle alternative) for cats. Both of these are produced by CEVA Animal Health, and as well as diffusers, sprays are also available, and for dogs, a pheromone-releasing collar too. With all of these points in mind, it can be difficult to know where to start when looking for the best dog pheromone diffuser. While animal pheromones are naturally occurring, their chemical structures are well understood by the scientific community, which has led to the ability to synthetically produce synthesised artificial pheromone compounds to mimic the action of naturally occurring pheromones. In the second study, we tested the efficacy of the new long-lasting diffusing gel against the reference plug-in product that had shown effectiveness in other studies [ 11, 14, 15, 16, 17, 18]. To assess the effectiveness of the devices on behavior and stress at home, two different scales were used by owners: one to assess the general behavior and sources of fear of the dogs, based on 13 behaviors commonly observed by owners and identified in previous studies [ 19, 20, 21] and another one assessing specific signs of stress that owners could observe and based on 11 signs, using the commonly used approach of a visual-analog scale [ 22].
