Highlight Tone Priority is a custom function (C.Fn-5), which can be enabled from the menu. Use of this custom function improves highlight detail by expanding the camera's dynamic range in the highlights. To test the effectiveness of this function, I photographed the same high-contrast scene in M mode at ISO 200 (the lowest sensitivity setting available with Highlight Tone Priority enabled), exposing for open shade. As you can see from these examples, Highlight Tone Priority reduced the extent of highlight blow-out considerably. The 100% crops also reveal that highlight detail was better retained and defined. In real-world settings, the 11EV dynamic range gives a good range of tone and, as with other similar models, there is plenty of detail that can be extracted from dark shadow areas, particularly in raw files. In light of this, it is better to meter for just before the highlights burn out and then boost shadow areas. The auto lighting optimiser, which can be found in the main menu, boosts the extreme ends of the dynamic range and has three levels of strength. Viewfinder, LCD, Live View and Video

This camera is also incorporated with the Basic+ and Creative Auto Mode. Both these modes allow you to experiment with photography and the shutter speed. This DSLR camera has a fast and accurate 9 point auto focus system, thus giving you sharp images every time. The 9 Point system allows for more creativity as it lets you experiment with photography. The camera also comes with the 63 - zone iFCL exposure metering. Internally, the 1100D is built around a 12-megapixel CMOS sensor and Canon’s 14-bit DIGIC 4 image processor. Combined, these enable the 1100D to shoot continuously at a maximum 3.2fps. Sensitivity stretches from ISO 100 to a very respectable ISO 6400. With improvements to image sensors during the past three years, it is likely that the 12.2-million-effective-pixel, APS-C-size sensor of the EOS 1100D has filtered its way down from the EOS 450D. The 450D occupies the next level up in the EOS range, although it has since been eclipsed by the newer EOS 550D with its improved 18-million-pixel sensor. What was good enough for an upper entry-level DSLR three years ago, it seems, is good enough for an entry-level DSLR now. This marks a two-million-pixel increase for the 1100D over the earlier EOS 1000D, which puts it on equal terms with the Pentax K-r but two million pixels shy of the Nikon D3100.

sec (1/2 or 1/3 stop increments), Bulb (Total shutter speed range. Available range varies by shooting mode) As well as the standard selection of Program, Aperture-priority, Shutter-priority and Manual shooting modes, the 1100D as has Fully Automatic, Forced Flash Off and five individual Scene modes: Portrait, Landscape, Close-up, Sports and Night Portrait. These regular shooting modes are complimented by two further shooting modes unique to Canon DSLR’s: Auto depth-of-field, and Creative Auto. The pop-up flash has a guide number of 9.2m @ ISO 100. For greater flash control and output, the 1100D is compatible with all Canon EF flashguns, which are connected via the hotshoe.

The 1100D’s list of upgrades over the 1000D include an extra 2MP of resolution, a more powerful and up-to-date image processor, a larger rear LCD monitor, an expanded sensitivity range, and the ability to record movies. In addition, the 1110D also benefits from the same nine-point AF module and 63-zone evaluative metering system of the 600D. Today the Canon EOS 1100D faces stiff competition, perhaps more so than when its predecessor was introduced in 2008. Not only are there great cameras available in the form of the Nikon D3100 and Pentax K-r, but also a plethora of other options now exist, including the compact system camera. I look forward to finding out what it is about the Canon EOS 1100D that may entice the punters away from its competition. It will be interesting to see if Canon’s new DSLR can handle the pressure. Features At the core of the 1100D is a nine-point AF system and 63-area iFCL metering system. These have both filtered down from higher specified Canon EOS models. Overall, the 1100D is solid at the core and has been kept simple, offering a good mix of scene modes and basic manual exposure modes. Features in use: Compatibility with EF and EF-S lensesWe do not know how much the 1100D will drop in price, but as it is currently set I would have to say there are better cameras out there. Nonetheless, the camera has been clearly positioned as a good starting point for DSLR photography, and it satisfies where it matters most, in image quality. Canon EOS 1100D: Focal points The company is making no bones about the 1100D’s target entry-level audience – the camera is small, lightweight, easily navigated and feels like a budget-price model. Canon Rebel T3 / EOS 1100D Review - Digital Photography Review

Peripheral Illumination Correction, first seen in the EOS 500D, is an in-camera solution designed to reduce the effect of light fall-off in the image corners. It works, though the difference is not night and day. ISO 400 does a similarly good job of controlling any noise, although its just about possible, at 100% to see some softening in shadow areas (to the right of the robot’s head)The Canon EOS 1100D / Rebel T3 has 2 different JPEG file quality settings available, including Fine and Normal, with Fine being the higher quality option. Here are two 100% crops which show the quality of the two options. Fine (4.33Mb) (100% Crop) A main difference during these three years is the now common presence in DSLRs of HD video. The 1100D brings this feature to a Canon entry-level model, with 720p recording at 30fps or 25fps. This is one of the most significant improvements over the 1000D and is not a feature of the EOS 450D’s sensor. Another step forward is an increased sensitivity range, rising by 2EV to ISO 100-6400 with no expanded setting. The new processor should go some way to help produce images with low levels of noise.

The Live View button is within easy reach of your right thumb. Using this button it is easy to enter Live View, but it takes a surprising amount of time for the camera to actually display the live image (think several seconds). A grid line display and very useful live histogram can be enabled to help with composition and exposure, and you can zoom in by up to 10x magnification of the image displayed on the LCD screen. Focusing in Live View is achieved via a half-press of the shutter release as for normal shooting. The 12 megapixel images were a little soft straight out of the camera at the default sharpening setting and ideally require some further sharpening in an application like Adobe Photoshop, or you can change the in-camera setting. The built-in flash worked well indoors, with no red-eye and good overall exposure. The night photograph was very good, with the maximum shutter speed of 30 seconds and Bulb mode allowing you to capture enough light in all situations. Creative Auto mode, meanwhile, is best described as a sort of halfway house between fully auto and more manual modes, with the 1100D allowing you to choose a ‘look’ for your photo and then allowing you to specify how much depth-of-field you want before making all the other calculations for you. As an easy-to-use creative mode it’s certainly useful, although we can’t really see how it helps beginners to learn the fundamentals of photography other than getting them to think about depth-of-field. The camera is also quite robust with a 0.1 Sec start time. The Canon EOS 1100D (also known as the Digital Rebel T3) is the new entry-level model in Canon's extensive range of digital SLR cameras, replacing the 3 year old 1000D model. Aimed at first-time DSLR users, the 1100D inherits features from both the equally new and more expensive EOS 600D and the previous 1000D. It has a 12 megapixel CMOS sensor, 2.7 inch LCD screen, 3fps continuous shooting mode, 9 autofocus points, 63-zone iFCL exposure metering, ISO 100-6400 sensitivity, on-screen Feature Guide, and 720p HD video capture. The Canon EOS 1100D has a great feature of recording videos in HD at 720 p resolution at 25 and 30 frames per second. The Canon EOS 1100D lets you experiment with several lenses as it is compatible with all EF and EF-S lenses. The focal length range of the 1100D SLR is 18 - 55 mm, while the aperture ranges from f/3.5 - 5.5. The Canon EOS 1100D / Rebel T3 is a small and light DSLR camera with an all-plastic shell, weighing in at just under 500g with the battery and memory card fitted and measuring 129.9 x 99.7 x 77.9 mm. In terms of build quality, the Canon EOS 1100D / T3 feels more than solid enough for an entry-level DSLR, on par with the more expensive 600D but as you'd expect not in the same league as the semi-professional EOS 60D and 7D models. It has a narrow, mildly uncomfortable hand-grip that unfortunately doesn't have any textured surface to aid your grip, with the entire body finished in an appealingly glossy but rather too smooth finish. Like all of Canon's APS-C digital SLR cameras, the EOS 1100D / T3 is compatible with the manufacturer's entire line-up of lenses, including both EF and EF-S glass. When changing lenses, EF lenses need to be aligned with the red dot on the lens mount, whereas EF-S lenses must be aligned with the white mark.
