In all the time I was in there I was restrained 97 times and put in and out of seclusion frequently – 17 times in total. Assuming a human rights approach to her second pregnancy, Alexis succeeded in having an entirely uneventful, and ‘perfect’ autistic birth experience. Sadly, Alexis’s experience did not end with understanding and compassion; she absconded from her care setting and sought refuge with a friend. As time went by, she realised that the care she thought was going to help her, might just be the very thing that would destroy her. She explained that there was nothing wrong with me, but that my brain functioned differently and that I would need to learn to work with it.

I was traumatised by what I had experienced – the helplessness and constant fear of being punished for being myself. I sought help from my GP and after a year and a half of misdiagnosis and mistreatment I was lucky that an autism specialist witnessed one of my meltdowns and recognised my condition immediately. My parents – a prison officer and a police officer who are both retired now – have always been wonderfully supportive of me and my ‘quirks’.

I still fancy my beautiful wife but we sleep in separate beds: Debbie Hayton reveals how gender reassignment. She could not understand why her focus and passion, which had always won her praise in the past, was now causing “deep worry and deep scrutiny”.
